Somnath the very first of the “Jyotirlings” – Enlightening symbol of Lord Shiva was concealed at this place and it was named against one of the incarnations of Lord Shiva. The word Somnath means Lord of the Moon and legend has it that this pilgrim was first assembled by the Moon God after Lord Shiva paid attention to his supplications. It is believed that once The Moon Lord was captivated by one of his wives Rohini, that he overlooked his other 26 wives who were are girls of Daksha. They grumbled to their father who reviled the Moon to fade. Consequent to this Moon slid on earth and chose this spot to implore Lord Shiva. After numerous years of compensation, Lord Shiva transpired before moon and revoked the condemnation mostly. This is what, is belived to cause the intermittent waning and waxing of the moon in the lunar phases. In appreciation The Moon Lord contrived this devout place in the honor of Lord Shiva and legends say that this temple was constructed of gold.

From that point it has been a prime target of the invaders and was crushed (A sum of seven times) and it was recreated assuredly by the Hindu worshippers. The lore also adds that Ravana made this shrine out of silver and Krishna out of sandalwood. This temple was last plundered and wrecked by Muhammad Gazhni in the sixteenth century. There after this sanctuary has been modified for the seventh time in Nov 1947 under the stewardship Sardar Vallabhai Patel, who had gone to Junagadh to manage the merger of the State of Junagadh with India and at present it has been constructed in the Chalukya style. Close by is a Somnath beach which is a splendid place to refuge from the worries of hasting life and relax with a Camel ride next to the Arabian Sea.
